PRODUCTION

I designed and developed The Adventures of The Lost Spacesheep, Destroyer of Universes alone in about a week, using Clickteam Fusion.

THE GAME

The Adventures of The Lost Spacesheep, Destroyer of Universes is a collection of 10 over-the-top shoot-em-up levels that become more and more absurd as the game progresses.

DESIGNER'S COMMENTARY

The Adventures of The Lost Spacesheep, Destroyer of Universes is a short shmup game originally made to test how "game feel" features like screenshake could be achieved in Clickteam Fusion. Once I had some nice screenshake and explosions going I decided to actually made a small game out of them, so I came up with the core mechanic of "filling a bar while staying in the center of the screen" and with the generally aesthetics.

I think this is another game that aims for simplicity and is quite successful at what it does, offering a series of engaging levels to face through a core mechanic that differs just enough from most shmup to be interesting but not unfamiliar.

The true breakthrough I had with this game's design was when, after having run off of ideas for new enemy, I decided to make all the levels from 5 onwards just straight up weird and quirky (I wanted to keep myself from re-using enemies as a design exercise). On the same line if I had to pick a problem with this game is how plain the first half of the game is, in comparison to how bizarre the second part is. While the dissonance may somehow work in its own way, if I had to re-make this I would definitely lean a lot more on the humorous side of the game from the start, as I think it adds that "oomph" that makes, what is an already nice core mechanic, truly entertaining.
